Lesson Plan Sample

Who was a better scorer in the 2011-12 NBA season: Heat forward LeBron James or Knicks center Tyson Chandler? To answer this, most people would count only the points each made, but in this lesson students will also take into account the points that they missed.

Students will compare the two players in various ways, from total points (equations) to percent of shots made (percents) to points per game/minute (unit rates & averages). In the end, they’ll walk away with a whole new way to watch a basketball game.Think LeBron James is the best scorer on the floor? Think again.  Connections to additional CCSS include: 6.RP.1, 6.RP.2, 6.RP.3c, 6.NS.5, 6.EE.2, and 6.EE.6.
